How to Build Credit From Scratch as a Young Adult

Young adult building credit from scratch with first card

Having no credit score is almost as frustrating as having a bad one. Landlords, lenders, and even some employers check credit — and “no file” is an automatic rejection for many. The good news: building credit from scratch typically takes 6-12 months to establish a scoreable profile and 2-3 years to reach excellent credit.

Step 1 — Secured Credit Card (Month 1-2)

A secured card requires a deposit (typically $200-500) which becomes your credit limit. You use it like a normal credit card, pay the balance monthly, and the positive payment history builds your credit score. After 12-18 months of on-time payments, many secured cards upgrade to unsecured with your deposit returned.

Best secured cards for building credit:

  • Discover It Secured — no annual fee, 2% cashback on dining and gas, automatic unsecured review at 7 months
  • Capital One Secured Mastercard — $49-$200 deposit depending on creditworthiness
  • Chime Credit Builder — no minimum deposit, linked to your Chime account

Step 2 — Use the Card Strategically

The two most impactful habits for a new credit builder:

  • Pay in full before the statement closes (not just the due date) — this reports near-0% utilization
  • Keep utilization under 10% on the secured card — if your limit is $300, don’t charge more than $30
Never miss a payment. One 30-day late payment can drop a thin-file score by 60-110 points and stays on your report for 7 years. Set up autopay for at least the minimum payment as a safety net.

Step 3 — Credit-Builder Loan (Month 3-6)

Credit-builder loans are specifically designed for building credit. You make monthly payments that are reported to all three bureaus, and receive the loan amount at the end. Self Inc. and many local credit unions offer these at $15-35/month.

Two accounts (card + loan) establishes “credit mix” — which accounts for 10% of your FICO score and helps it develop faster.

Step 4 — Become an Authorized User

If a parent, sibling, or trusted friend has a credit card with a long positive history and low utilization, ask to be added as an authorized user. The entire history of that card may appear on your credit report, instantly adding years of positive history. You don’t need to use the card or even have it.

Step 5 — Monitor and Protect Your New Credit

Check your credit report quarterly (AnnualCreditReport.com — free weekly during this building phase). Watch for errors that could derail your new credit history. Dispute any inaccuracy immediately using our dispute letter templates.

0-5 months No score (thin file) Account open, no scoreable history yet
6 months 580-650 First FICO score generated
12 months 640-700 Eligible for some unsecured cards
18-24 months 680-730 Good card offers, car loan eligibility
36 months 720-780+ Mortgage-eligible, competitive rates
Can I build credit without a credit card?

Yes — a credit-builder loan alone will build credit. Alternatively, rent reporting services (Experian RentBureau, RentTrack) can report on-time rent payments to bureaus. Student loans in repayment also build credit. However, a secured card is the fastest and most accessible method.

How many credit cards should a beginner have?

Start with one secured card. Add a second account (card or credit-builder loan) after 6 months to improve credit mix and utilization ratio. Three to five accounts total is generally sufficient for an excellent score — more isn’t better.
