Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between mean and median?
Mean: sum divided by count — sensitive to outliers. Median: middle value when sorted — resistant to outliers. Example: incomes of $30k, $35k, $40k, $45k, $1M — mean is $230k (misleadingly high), median is $40k (more representative). Use median when your data has outliers.
What does standard deviation tell me?
How spread out values are from the mean. A small SD means data clusters tightly around the mean; a large SD means data is widely spread. In a normal distribution: 68% of values fall within 1 SD, 95% within 2 SD, 99.7% within 3 SD (the empirical rule).
