How to Dispute Credit Report Errors and Protect Your Credit

Errors on a credit report can make your financial history look worse than it is. Common problems include accounts that do not belong to you, incorrect balances, duplicate accounts, inaccurate payment statuses, and outdated personal information.

Review each report carefully

Download or request your reports from the recognized reporting agencies in your region. Compare the information with statements, payment confirmations, account-opening records, and identity documents. Keep copies of everything you send.

Submit a clear dispute

Explain exactly what is inaccurate, identify the account or entry, and attach supporting evidence. Follow the reporting agency’s instructions and submit disputes through its official process. You may also contact the company that supplied the information, often called the furnisher.

Follow up

Record the submission date and keep any confirmation numbers. Review the investigation result and request a correction if the information remains inaccurate. If you see signs of identity theft, use the identity-theft reporting and protection process available in your country.

Know the limits

A dispute is for inaccurate or incomplete information, not for removing accurate negative information simply because it is inconvenient. Be cautious of companies promising an instant score increase or asking you to dispute information you know is correct.
