Blood Alcohol Content Calculator – Understanding BAC and Alcohol Metabolism

The legal blood alcohol content limit for driving in all 50 US states is 0.08%. But what does that number actually mean, how do you reach it, and why does the same amount of alcohol affect two people so differently? Understanding BAC is not just about legal compliance — it is about making informed decisions.

What BAC Measures

BAC measures the concentration of alcohol in the bloodstream, expressed as a percentage by weight. A BAC of 0.08% means 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. At this level, reaction time, coordination, visual tracking, and information processing are meaningfully impaired — even if you feel fine.

Use the BAC Calculator to estimate your blood alcohol content from drinks, weight, sex, and time elapsed.

What Is a Standard Drink?

One standard drink in the US contains 14 grams of pure alcohol:

  • 12 oz of regular beer (5% ABV)
  • 5 oz of wine (12% ABV)
  • 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (40% ABV)

Many modern craft beers are 7-10% ABV, making a single pint equivalent to 1.5-2 standard drinks. Large restaurant pours of wine (6-8 oz) equal 1.2-1.6 standard drinks.

Why BAC Varies So Much Between People

Body weight and composition: Alcohol distributes through body water. More body mass = larger volume = lower BAC per drink. Muscle tissue contains more water than fat tissue, which is why body composition matters beyond just weight.

Sex: Women generally have a lower percentage of body water than men of the same weight and also have less alcohol dehydrogenase (the liver enzyme that metabolizes alcohol), leading to higher BAC from the same amount.

Food: Food in the stomach slows alcohol absorption significantly. Drinking on an empty stomach can produce peak BAC 50-100% higher than the same drinks consumed with a full meal.

Metabolism rate: Average metabolism is approximately 0.015% BAC per hour — roughly one standard drink per hour. This rate is relatively fixed and cannot be accelerated by coffee, water, or food after drinking.

BAC Levels and Effects

  • 0.02-0.03: Slight relaxation, mood lift, minor judgment impairment
  • 0.05-0.07: Impaired judgment, reduced inhibition, slowed reaction time
  • 0.08: Legal limit — impaired balance, coordination, reaction time
  • 0.10-0.15: Significant impairment — slurred speech, poor coordination
  • 0.20+: Serious impairment — confusion, nausea, blackout risk
  • 0.30+: Potentially life-threatening
