How to Calculate Etsy Fees and Know Your Real Profit Per Sale

DigitalsPrintout Blog • Financial Tools & Credit Tips

Most Etsy sellers set a price and assume the rest is profit. Then they check their payment account and wonder where the money went. Understanding every Etsy fee — before you set your price — is the single fastest way to make your shop more profitable.

The Five Etsy Fees Every Seller Must Know

1. Listing Fee — $0.20 per listing

Etsy charges $0.20 every time you publish or renew a listing. This applies whether or not the item sells. Auto-renew means this hits automatically every four months for unsold items. For digital products with high volume, listing fees stack up.

2. Transaction Fee — 6.5% of (price + shipping)

This is the biggest fee most sellers overlook. Etsy takes 6.5% of the total order amount, which includes the price you charge for shipping. If you charge $5 shipping, Etsy takes 6.5% of that too.

3. Payment Processing Fee — 3% + $0.25

When a buyer pays through Etsy Payments (the primary checkout method), Etsy charges 3% of the transaction total plus $0.25 flat per order. This varies slightly by country.

4. Offsite Ads Fee — 12–15%

If Etsy advertises your listing on Google, Facebook, Pinterest, or other platforms and a buyer clicks through, Etsy charges 15% (or 12% if you earn $10,000+/year). You cannot opt out unless your annual revenue is under $10,000. This fee applies on top of all other fees.

5. Etsy Ads (Optional) — You set the budget

Etsy’s in-platform ads are optional and run on a cost-per-click model. You choose your daily budget. Unlike offsite ads, these are fully opt-in.

Real Example: What Does a $9.99 Digital Sale Actually Pay?

Let’s say you sell a digital download for $9.99 with no shipping:

  • Listing fee: $0.20
  • Transaction fee (6.5%): $0.65
  • Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.55
  • Total fees: $1.40
  • Net received: $8.59

If that sale came from an offsite ad, add another 15% ($1.50) = total fees of $2.90, leaving $7.09. That’s a meaningful difference when you’re pricing a product.

How to Price to Hit Your Target Profit

Work backwards from what you need to take home. If you want to net $7 on a digital product:

  • Add the listing fee you’ll amortize across expected sales
  • Divide your target by (1 − 0.065 − 0.03) = 0.905
  • Add $0.25 to the result

That formula gives you the price to charge before fees. Most sellers round up and price to a clean number like $8.99 or $9.99.

The Biggest Pricing Mistake Etsy Sellers Make

Pricing based on competition rather than costs. If your competitor sells at $4 and your fees on a $4 sale eat $1.25, you’re netting $2.75 before any time spent creating the product. Know your floor first, then price competitively above it — not at or below it.
