How to Use a Word Count Tool for Better Writing and SEO

Writer using word count tool for SEO content

A word count tool is one of the most-used writing utilities online — and most people use it for only one purpose: checking if they’ve hit a minimum. But word count data contains more useful information than the raw number. Here’s how to use it to write better content and rank higher.

The Different Ways to Count Words

Our free word counter shows more than just total words:

  • Word count — total words in the text
  • Character count — total characters including spaces
  • Character count (no spaces) — relevant for social media character limits
  • Sentence count — useful for reading level analysis
  • Paragraph count — content structure assessment
  • Reading time — estimated at 200-250 words per minute average
  • Word frequency — which words appear most often (keyword density)

SEO Word Count Guidelines by Content Type

Content TypeRecommended LengthReason
Blog posts (informational)1,500–2,500 wordsCovers topic thoroughly, earns links
Pillar / cornerstone content3,000–5,000+ wordsRanks for broad competitive keywords
Product pages300–800 wordsTransactional intent, conciseness matters
Local business pages500–1,000 wordsEnough to target local keywords
FAQ pages1,000–2,000 wordsTargets question-based searches
News / news-style posts300–600 wordsRecency and brevity matter
Word count is not a ranking factor directly — Google ranks based on relevance and quality, not length. However, longer content correlates with higher rankings because it tends to cover topics more completely. The goal is to answer the user’s question fully, not to hit a number.

Using Word Frequency for Keyword Analysis

The word frequency feature in our word frequency counter shows which words appear most often in your text. This is a simple form of keyword density analysis:

  • Your primary keyword should appear naturally throughout — not stuffed, but present
  • A healthy keyword density is 1-2% (keyword appears 1-2 times per 100 words)
  • Over 3-4% can look spammy to search engines
  • Related keywords and synonyms should also appear naturally

Reading Time — The Metric Readers Care About

A 2,000-word article takes approximately 8-10 minutes to read at 200-250 WPM. Displaying estimated reading time (many blog platforms do this automatically) sets expectations and reduces bounce rate from readers who abandon long articles after the first paragraph. Our reading time calculator gives exact estimates.

Does Google have a minimum word count requirement?

No — Google has explicitly stated there is no minimum word count for ranking. Thin content (very short pages with little value) can be penalized, but this is about quality and value, not word count. A 300-word page that perfectly answers a specific question can outrank a 3,000-word page that meanders.

How do I check word count in Google Docs, Word, and Notion?

Google Docs: Tools → Word Count. Microsoft Word: shown in the status bar at the bottom, or Review → Word Count. Notion: not built in — paste your text into our word counter. Apple Pages: View → Show Word Count.
