Intermittent Fasting Schedule — How to Set Your Eating Window

DigitalsPrintout • Finance & Credit Tips • 2026

Intermittent fasting (IF) is not a diet — it is an eating schedule. You are not changing what you eat, only when. The most popular protocol, 16:8, involves fasting for 16 hours and eating during an 8-hour window. Done consistently, it reduces calorie intake for most people through appetite suppression and time-limited access to food, without requiring calorie counting.

The Most Popular IF Protocols

16:8 — The Daily Window

Fast 16 hours, eat in an 8-hour window. Most commonly: skip breakfast, eat 12pm–8pm. The most sustainable and popular form of IF. Works for most people who naturally skip breakfast anyway.

18:6 — The Narrower Window

Eat within a 6-hour window (e.g., 1pm–7pm). More challenging but produces more pronounced metabolic effects. Good for those who have plateaued on 16:8.

OMAD — One Meal a Day

23:1 fasting. Very restrictive, difficult to maintain long-term, and challenging to hit protein targets in one meal. Studied in some contexts but not recommended for most people without guidance.

5:2 — Weekly Calorie Restriction

Eat normally 5 days, restrict to 500–600 calories on 2 non-consecutive days. An alternative for those who struggle with daily time-restricted eating.

The Physiology Behind IF

After approximately 12–14 hours of fasting, liver glycogen (stored glucose) is depleted and the body begins burning fat for fuel. Ketone production begins. After 16+ hours, cellular autophagy (the process of clearing damaged cellular components) increases. After 24+ hours, growth hormone secretion peaks significantly.

Getting Started Without Misery

Start with 12:12 for one week, then 14:10, then 16:8. Cold turkey 16:8 is difficult for those accustomed to breakfast. The hunger you feel in the morning during IF is largely habit and hormonal — it diminishes within 1–2 weeks as ghrelin (hunger hormone) adapts to the new eating schedule. Break fasts with protein-rich foods to reduce muscle catabolism and control appetite through the eating window.
