Frequently Asked Questions
What Flesch score should I aim for?
For web content and marketing copy: 60-70 (standard/plain English, 8th-9th grade). For general consumer audiences: 70+. For legal, technical, or academic content: 30-50 is typical and appropriate. The New York Times averages around 65-70; academic journals typically 20-40.
How do I make text easier to read?
Use shorter sentences (aim for 15-20 words average). Choose simple words over complex alternatives (use instead of utilize, help instead of facilitate). Break up long paragraphs. Use active voice. Avoid jargon when possible, or define it when necessary. Each of these changes improves Flesch scores significantly.
