The most common Etsy pricing mistake: charging just slightly above material costs because “the market sets the price.” This leads to unprofitable sales and unsustainable shops. Correct pricing starts with your costs and works out to the market — not the other way around.
The Three Common Pricing Methods (and Which One Works)
| Method | Formula | Problem |
|---|---|---|
| Cost-plus | Materials × 2-3 | Ignores your labor time |
| Market-based | What competitors charge | May be copying others’ mistakes |
| Value-based (recommended) | Materials + Labor + Overhead + Profit | Takes more calculation — but ensures profitability |
The Craft Pricing Formula
Use our profit margin calculator and break-even calculator alongside this formula:
Wholesale Price = (Materials + Labor) × 2
Retail Price = Wholesale × 2 (or Materials + Labor + Overhead + Profit × markup)
Step 1 — Calculate Material Cost Per Item
Every material used, including packaging, tissue paper, stickers, thank-you cards, poly mailers, and tape. Track actual cost per unit — not per purchase. If a $15 skein of yarn makes 3 items, materials per item = $5.
Step 2 — Calculate Your Labor Hourly Rate
Pay yourself at minimum $20/hour for skilled craft work — ideally $25-35/hour. Time everything: cutting, assembling, finishing, quality checking, packaging. If an item takes 45 minutes and you pay yourself $25/hour: labor = $18.75.
Step 3 — Add Overhead
Monthly overhead includes Etsy fees (listing renewal, subscription), photography equipment, studio rent, software (Canva, Photoshop), shipping supplies, tools, electricity. Divide monthly overhead by number of items made monthly to get per-item overhead.
Step 4 — Add Etsy Transaction Fees
Etsy charges 6.5% transaction fee + ~3% payment processing. Add approximately 10% of your price to cover these. Our break-even calculator calculates exactly how many sales cover your monthly overhead.
Step 5 — Add Profit Margin
Profit is not the same as paying yourself. Profit funds growth — more materials, better equipment, advertising, savings. Add 10-30% profit margin on top of costs.

Etsy-Specific Pricing Considerations
Shipping Cost Strategy
Buyers prefer “free shipping” listings (Etsy also promotes them). Consider building shipping into your price and offering free shipping — a $25 item + $5 shipping often converts worse than a $30 item with free shipping, even though the total is identical.
When to Raise Prices
- Your items consistently sell out fast
- Buyers rarely ask about price or mention it
- Your labor hourly rate is below $20/hour when calculated
- Materials costs have increased
Digital Products Have Different Economics
For digital downloads: no materials, no shipping, no labor per sale (only one-time creation time). Price based on value delivered to the buyer, not time spent creating. A credit repair template bundle that saves buyers $200+ in professional fees can justify $15-25 even if it took 2 hours to make.
Rarely. Competing on price against mass manufacturers or overseas sellers is a race to the bottom you can’t win. Instead, differentiate on quality, photography, branding, and customer service. Buyers who value handmade expect to pay more — they want to, it’s why they’re on Etsy.
Track conversion rate: if 1% or more of visitors buy (1 sale per 100 views), your pricing is in range. Under 0.5% conversion may indicate price, photography, or SEO issues. Etsy shows your stats in the Shop Manager.
